4. Vera Molnár dies at 99

Generative Art pioneer Vera Molnár passed away last week (December 7th) at 99. This year, the Hungarian artist stamped her mark in the blockchain through Themes and Variations (in collaboration with Martin Grasser) via Sotheby’s & ARTXCODE.

5. [Hot Collections] TezPole Goes Mainstream

What started as a photo from an event at Art Basel Miami spiraled out of control and produced memes, vibrant art, and an important message. Artists and art should be treated well.

There are certain events leading up to December that got me excited about the evolution of generative art.

• fxhash 2.0 ETH launch (over 80 generative artworks scheduled).

• Foundation integrates generative art into their Worlds via Highlight.xyz.

• Two tremendous funding opportunities for digital artists.

• Alba opened its platform to the public.

It seems like big waves are coming our way…

fxhash 2.0: a week packed with releases + live events

The ETH integration will happen on December 1st, in what looks to be eight days of generative art celebration.

Over 80 collections are currently listed in their calendar. Some artists are releasing ‘independently,’ while others do so via one of the seven partners listed, including new names like Bitforms, ARTXCODE, and Expanded.Art.

In addition, fxhash recently shared their list of real-life events worldwide —the US, Europe, and Asia will host over ten community events.

In August, I talked to Ciphrd (fxhash founder) about plans for the platform and a personal collection that will be part of the 2.0 launch.

Foundation Partners with Highlight to bring generative art into their Worlds

Yesterday, Foundation, one of the first NFT art marketplaces, announced their partnership with newcomer generative art platform Highlight.

This is interesting in multiple ways.

Foundation has dedicated the last year to producing its ‘Worlds.' Curators, galleries, and collectives can now organize releases while being rewarded. Worlds have robust features like team management, onchain distribution, and customized smart contracts - similar to Manifold.

Although Foundation has one of the best interfaces in the space, I was missing generative art (long-form generative coded art). The wait is over, and anyone can now release generative long-form artworks on Foundation thanks to their integration with Highlight.

The generative art platform started as a curated marketplace with two shows (Flatlands and Strange Skies, curated by Haiver) early this year. They kept working on transitioning to an open marketplace and recently opened to everyone.

Last week, I had the chance to talk to the duo whose career spans three decades. The McCoys' work has been widely exhibited in the US and internationally, and their creations are part of some of the most important collections in the world, such as the MoMA and the Met.

In 2014, Kevin coined the idea of an NFT named Quantum, which sold at Sothyby’s for $1.4M in 2021.

Are you in for the Art or the Tech?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. It seems like most people are more inclined to one of these two poles. The answer to this reveals a lot about your interests and could help to shape your collection or your artist's vision.

These aren’t mutually exclusive, and there isn’t a right or wrong…

In for the Art:

• meanings, stories, and feelings

• artist's journey and vision

• aesthetics

• art form (sculpture, photographs, poetry, paintings, gen art)

• movement (pop, abstract, conceptual, maybe even memes?)

In for the Tech:

• used tools, code, libraries

• smart contracts and distribution

• innovation

• where is the artwork minted (platform/blockchain)?

• on-chain or off-chain?

• problems solved w/ blockchain & NFTs

• the kind of token (e.g., ERC-20)

What am I in for?

In my case, I entered the space for the tech. I worked in that industry for over 8 years as a software dev, data scientist, and product manager. I love to build software, bringing me to blockchain/dApps/NFTs.

Early on, I was 80% for tech and 20% for the art. Over the past three years, as I got more involved in the space, the art side grew on me.

These days, I feel like I am 50% for the art, 50% for the tech…

What does this mean?

I pay equal attention to the art and the tech components; they are equally important when I collect, write, or share blockchain art.

Last week, William Mapan released ‘Sketchbook A’, a generative coded collection as part of the ‘Intimacy’ exhibition via verse, to an impressive reception.

No worries if you missed the details; I've got you covered with two reasons why this collection is unique and an impressive milestone for the French artist.

1. ‘Sketchbook A’ Recreates Human Paintings

What I found impressive is William started with physical drawings. He shared the process in his social networks, creating colors and sketches before jumping to the code. Those who have tried to replicate a drawing with code know how hard that is. In this case, you could argue the algorithmic paintings look even better and unlock the door for infinite combinations and patterns.

“Sketchbook A is a series of what appear to be scrawled childlike drawings created with coloured pencils, doodles one might find in a sketchbook. Upon closer inspection, the works are anything but childlike, and anything but scrawled.”

2. Tiny Supply, Infinite Generations

This is William’s tiniest long-form generative collection, as the supply is 64 pieces. Nevertheless, thanks to how it was coded and set up via verse, anyone could generate and save an output.

Over 1 million outputs have been generated in just eight days… It isn’t about the quantity only, as the algorithm ’supported’ such a high number of generations with a vast diversity of palettes, patterns, and combinations.

Besides having an impressive record of commercial success on all his releases, this collection records a remarkable milestone for William…

Last week, I had a great chat with Valerie Whitacre, Head of Arts at Trilitech, a London-based hub dedicated to developing and elevating new ideas and innovation built on the Tezos ecosystem.

If you have been paying attention to digital art (generative, AI, or other forms), you probably have seen Refik Anadol’s Unsupervised – Machine Hallucinations piece.

The Turkish-American artist captivated everyone’s attention with his AI-based animation, which is still on display at the MoMA main entrance until October 29 (it has been extended multiple times due to the fantastic reception).

Last week, the MoMA announced it had acquired this piece, and it is now part of its permanent collection. The piece was originally exhibited at FeralFile, and it was donated by Ryan Zurrer, the collector who acquired Beeple’s Human One for $29M, along with the RFC Collection, led by Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile and Desiree Casoni.

Sounds exciting, right? Here are a few reasons why this is particularly special for AI, generative, and digital art in general.

Most best-selling blockchain artists are men (85% male, 15% female)

Last week, I shared an article to investigate the influence of artists’ names on their sales. I reviewed data from best-selling artists on Art Blocks, fxhash, Foundation, verse, and Super Rare. I found some interesting patterns…

Coming back to Anadol’s acquisition, here are a few reasons why this is particularly exciting:

1. With traffic of ±4M physical and ±55M online visitors per year (!), they have an amazing reach, representing higher magnitudes than any digital gallery or marketplace.

2. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has a collection of digital works by artists like Pindar Van Arman, Claire Silver, Justin Aversano, Cai Guo-Qiang, Neil Strauss, and Monica Rizzolli—most of which were donated by the mysterious Cozomo de’ Medici. These moves could be the norm instead of the exception.

3. “The Museum of Modern Art announces an innovative slate of Fall 2023–Winter 2024 acquisitions,” read the official announcement. “that encourages new thinking about human and machine intelligence, creativity, and the potential of art and technology to reshape our physical and digital worlds.” This sounds like part of a long-term vision and not an isolated event.

I hope you had a great weekend.

Over the past week, EmProps launched a new way to distribute AI-generated art, where artists can release a “long-form” or a collection of AI artworks at once.

Although many galleries and marketplaces offer the possibility to release AI art on the blockchain, this is the first one that does it in a “long-form” fashion and openly (to many artists at the same time), where the artist creates the algorithm (in this case, prompt-based). The outputs are randomly generated from their parameter selection.

One of my favorite collections released so far comes from Lisa Orth, a generative artist who released NY86, a series that reimagines the grunge and underground vibe from New York City in the 80s.

EmProps is still in Beta, so be aware that there are a few bugs here and there.

Abstract artist Clint Fulkerson released a self-explanatory AI collection - the artist’s floor wallpapers. I’m impressed by the high quality and diversity of the outputs (rare for an AI-based collection).

AI imagines famous generative artworks by Claus Wilke

I asked the AI to imagine famous (and some not so famous) generative artworks purely based on the artwork's title and the artist's name. The AI did the best it could, but some outputs are rather amusing.

This experiment shows us that some artworks have quite accurate descriptive titles and others less so. I also feel confident that the AI was not trained on any of these artworks.

Organic Aura by New in Town

New in Town’s Organic Aura project starts by generating images with code (using p5.js). This image is then transformed using the SDXL AI algorithm, culminating in creating the desired output, where the essence of nature's aura is revealed.

The collection is inspired by the skeletonization process, which naturally or chemically removes the fleshy part of the leaf, leaving behind the intricate network of vascular tissue.

5. [Interesting Read] Musée d’Orsay partners with Tezos Foundation

To kick off the partnership, the museum - Musée d’Orsay - will offer on-chain digital souvenirs to visitors of its upcoming exhibition, “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: The Final Months,” which opens on October 3 and will explore works created by the renowned Dutch painter in the last two months of his life.

1. Kaloh’s Podcast: Aleksandra Art & Laurence Fuller

Last week, I shared my first live-stream Podcast recording. Aleksandra Art was the guest, and we had a great conversation about digital art events, curation, her role at Joyn, and more.

2. beef brothko by die with the most likes

The eccentric artist released this controversial series at Glitch Marfa during the annual ArtBlocks event. A reader posted this collection on the premium members Discord as it was minting live on Marfa for 0.0365 ETH, and it quickly rose to a 0.62 ETH floor (at the time of this writing).

The collection and how it was showcased is a critique of what is happening in the generative art space. AI artist Pindar Van Arman wrote a fantastic thread titled Top Ten Cool Things about Beef Brothkos.

We all went to the show for a little culture, but Die gave us an experience that actually left us less cultured. Everyone that went to the Flee Market is now less human and a little dumber for having gone.

3. Ringers by Dmitri Cherniak - The LACMA Iterations

Dmitri Cherniak teamed up with LACMA and Avant Arte for a new iteration of the popular Ringers series. This will be an open edition where all the pieces will be printed and shipped worldwide.

Three days ago, this Fidenza sold for 53.7 ETH (±$85,000), making it the weekly highest generative art sale. The buyer got a sweet deal as Fidenza’s floor is over 65 ETH.

4. MoMA Postcard

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) announced the MoMA Postcard, teaming up with 15 digital artists and Autonomy Wallet.

NFTs and blockchain can be daunting to some and off-putting to others. Engaging with web3 technology in a disarmingly fun way, the MoMA Postcard project aims to create a welcoming environment for learning, experimentation, and conversation around these nascent technologies.

3. A Daydream for Libby by genlight via gmStudio

A generative fairy tale book made with love and code.

gmStudio released a new generative art collection — A daydream for Libby — created by genlight, who is known for creating A Fundamental Dispute. The collection minted out for 0.15 ETH (±$250) per piece and is available in the secondary market.

4. Anfractuous by Landlines Art via fxhash

This collection is still open for 11 Tezos (±$7) —over 500 pieces available out of 1000. It uses fxparams, which means collectors can adjust different parameters to generate their pieces.

The title is quite literally a visual description of the work, as anfractuous means: characterized by windings and turnings; sinuous; circuitous. With this project I aimed to strike a balance between easily recognizable smooth large scale forms and the small fragmented details that populate these forms.

5. Distance by William Mapan via LACMA & Cactoid Labs

Distance by William Mapan was released last week to great reception. The French artist continues exploring the recreation of paintings made with code. This collection was curated by Cactoid Labs and released with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

“I’m interested in Klee’s research into color and his work at the Bauhaus. Color is the main component that I think about as an artist. How you use saturation, the value of the color, how you mix it. I always try to make the colors I use.”

6. Interesting Read: Matching Gen Art X A.I. by Fernando Jerez

I found this article by Fernando Jerez super interesting as he delves into a use case that combines generative coded art and AI.

During this year 2023, my interest in generating images with AI trained models has been growing until reaching a point where I believe I have found an interesting application.

If you aren’t familiar with Foundation worlds, it is a way to curate exhibitions, the curator takes a cut, and Foundation handles the technology and sales process.

It has been a busy week with a lot of action… So, I expanded the list to six news this time.

1. Kaloh’s Podcast: Agoria and Ivona Tau

Last week, I chatted with the international DJ, producer, composer, and generative artist Agoria. This was a fun one!

I will chat with Ivona Tau, an A.I. researcher, photographer, and A.I. artist, this Monday. I’d like to learn about her neural network research, transition to a full-time artist, and upcoming collections.

2. Blind Gallery x Feral File — Vistas Edition

The collaboration between Blind Gallery, Feral File, and Casey Reas is underway! This time, the works are inspired by the landscape theme.

• Over 300 Mint Passes have been minted.

• The artist will be revealed on September 7th.

3. Proof Signal Segment

I was invited to write a segment on the Proof Signal newsletter. In the first issue, I submerged into Kim Asendorf’s Grails IV piece: “Open Console.”

4. Rare Staking by Super Rare

Last week, the Rare Staking protocol was introduced by Super Rare; it aims to be a decentralized way for collectors to curate artists and earn rewards.

As part of the RARE Protocol, we propose a novel cryptoeconomic system in which users stake on each other to signal reputation and support, creating a peer-to-peer network similar to a web of trust. The statefulness of this network generates an open dataset for participant reputation at scale, without the use of verified credentials or centralized intermediaries. We anticipate that data generated by this network will aid users in discovering relevant and reputable content, resulting in powerful network effects that transcend any individual marketplace and promote increased visibility for new and emerging creators.

5. [Hot Collection] Mappings by Ira Greenberg via BrainDrops

Ira Greenberg — who we previously covered on the release of BEASTS via EmProps — released Mappings to great reception last week.

The collection accumulated close to 100 ETH ($160k) in secondary sales and has maintained a floor price of ±0.14 ETH ($230) after minting out for 0.1 ETH (±$160).

Mappings arose organically through an exploration of generative space and form. Map structures began emerging and with them suggestions of underlying motifs. In this way, the generative AI process exists orthogonally to a traditional observational approach, where an artist begins with a motif.

6. [Hot Auction] wn10R8tl723Cb by Qubibi via Expanded.art & Objkt One

This 1/1 piece, by Japanese artist Qubibi, sold for 8,500 Tezos (±$6,000). It is part of Techno Terrain: Nature in the Age of the Metaverse exhibition, curated by Anika Meier.

3. [Hot Collection] Winds of Yawanawa by Yawanawa and Refik Anadol

This collection resembles Refik's artwork exhibited at MoMA: Unsupervised. This time, the data to train the models consists of images from the indigenous Yawanawa community. Visit the link for the animated piece (a static image doesn’t give it credit).

A first-of-its-kind space of co-creation between the Brazilian Indigenous Yawanawa community and media artist Refik Anadol.

Winds of Yawanawa has taken the digital art world by surprise (maybe not a big surprise?) as the collection floor surpasses 10 Eth (currently over 8) and produced over 750 Eth on the secondary market (just in OpenSea).

4. [Upcoming Collections] Bright Moments Buenos Aires

The awaited lineup for the upcoming Bright Moments was released, featuring a mix of Latin-American artists (+Jeff Davis, as expected).

I’ve been minting and collecting on a new digital art marketplace called Zero One. It has hic et nunc vibes, and many artists and collectors have been testing it.

Why is it trending?

• Everything is free to collect with a 20% royalty on secondary sales.

• To collect, you need to create a piece (you’ll receive ten mint passes).

• You need to wait 24 hours to create a new piece.

• Be aware there are plenty of bugs, and the platform is in Beta! So be patient.

Closing Question: We continue to see new marketplaces, platforms, galleries, and dApps emerge in different blockchains: friends.tech on Base, Prohibition on Arbitrum, Zero One on Avax are a few examples…

The 923 pieces were minted over the past week on Bright Moments Galleries around the world and digitally.

4. [Upcoming Collection] Crypto-Native by Melissa Wiederrecht via Highlight

Melissa Wiederrecht is part of the artists headlining the ‘Onchain Summer’ collections by the new generative platform - Highlight. Her collection is named ‘Crypto-Native’ and is a much more personal approach to her digital art journey.

In “Crypto-Native,” the artist taunts the viewer with hundreds of questions centering around the concept of value in art, from the perspective of a web3 crypto-native gen-artist in 2023. She lays bare the thoughts, worries, and sometimes outright strange things that a crypto artist thinks about on a daily basis - shedding light on some of the culture, values, and idiosyncrasies of the crypto-art and NFT movement.

5. [Interesting Read] ‘Web3 Marketing: A Handbook for the Next Internet Revolution’ by Amanda Cassatt

In other news, I discovered this book by Amanda Cassat, CEO of Web 3 agency Serotonin. Squiggle in the cover and detailed research about Web 3 Marketing. Seems like a great resource for artists and creators in general.

Marcelo released three fxhash collections (on Tezos) and two 1/1s on Ethereum. He created a link between the two blockchains. “The ETH pieces will be distorted if they can't connect to the fxhash API or if the activity in the pieces is low or nonexistent.”

5. [Interesting read] SuperRare Zack analysis from the previous bear market

I found the following analysis by SuperRare Zack (SVP at Super Rare) fascinating…

The biggest differences between building in this bear market and the last bear market from my perspective:

Expectations:

During my first year with SR the price of ETH fell from $800 to $80. While it was scary as hell as a first time bear market-er, it didn’t really affect much on SR because the few people that were here at the time didn’t care about the money. We were all just having fun supporting friends on the internet dreaming of what this could all some day be. Selling a work for $10 was exciting, let alone $100. Nobody ever talked about the crypto market or ETH prices - it was truly all about the art and the friendships. Getting back even a fraction of that magic would serve us all well.

This work explores the concept of parallel realities and the paths we choose, reflecting on the multiple beginnings and various ends that compose our individual narratives.

Ivona debuted on BrainDrops — I wrote about BrainDrops here —with a 500 AI-generated pieces series. The floor is currently 0.11 ETH, and it has commanded a volume of 8 ETH (reported by OpenSea).

The technical details and process are remarkably particular; here are a few words from Ivona:

I trained 10 different models with different parameters and after deep latent space explorations I settled on model no. 173 , trained for 274 epochs (roughly 4 days of training on a single GPU card). 

From the infinite number of images that model 173-274 could generate I hand picked 250 that I felt captured a unique moment in space and time. 

Out of 62 250 possible combinations to connect the still images I curated a set of 500 that result in this collection and are the foundational building blocks.

This collection was part of the NFT Show Europe Ilusiones Arbóreas collection.

There are multiple generative art releases as part of the show, including pieces from A.L. Crego, Arsiliath, Helena Sarín, Presstube, and Zancan.

3. moonsong 1.0 by Eliza SJ

NFT Show Europe x fxhash live minting experience.

This is an animated-audio-generative collection (open it for the full experience).

As we peer into the digital pond before us, we see the moon reflected back, its water softly rippling outwards. When the audio is activated (via click or tap), the ripples are ever so slightly influenced, reverberating the moon's song.

Moonsong 1.0 contemplates the beauty and symbolic significance of the moon and its cycles. Each composition is intricately tailored to the specific date and time input, capturing the chosen moment and allowing for a deeply personal connection with the essence of the cosmos.

4. Yamabushi's Horizons by Richard Nadler via verse

This AI 128 pieces collection had a fantastic reception, with the primary auction ending at ~$1,000 and the current floor settling over $3,300. It has also amazed a whopping $270,000 in secondary volume.

Yamabushi are revered as mountain priests or ascetic hermits in Japan, devoutly following the ancient traditions of Shugendō. This spiritual practice intertwines elements of Buddhism, Shintoism, and the indigenous worship of mountains. The very name "yamabushi" itself translates to "those who find solace in the mountains."

5. [Upcoming Collection] Bubble by Santiago via wild.xyz

Bubble is a generative collection of dynamic NFTs by Santiago. Pulling at the seams of speculative dynamics that govern much of the flow of attention and resources in Web3 space, Bubble reflects upon the fragility of art value and the perceived ephemerality of art objects in a space that is predicated upon accelerating market dynamics.

4. [Upcoming Collection] Themes and Variations by Vera Molnár (in collaboration with Martin Grasser) will be released via Sotheby’s.

All these variations around letters resonate in me like music. Even though I stopped playing the piano at the age of 15, music has never left me. I immediately think of Goldberg Variations or Beethoven's Diabelli Variations on a Waltz. That's why I gave the title Theme and Variations to the latest project with the letters N, F, and T that I am working on for my first and only long form generative art project.
